Yoga for Anxiety Attacks

Yoga is beneficial for people who suffer from anxiety attacks. This ancient form of exercise and mind-body activity has many well-documented beneficial effects on the human body, particularly in the forms of treating debilitating physical and mental diseases such as depression, high blood pressure and even asthma. The exercises and patterns of movement, as well as the philosophical teachings of yoga, and the culture of a class, are all beneficial means of treatment for someone who suffers from anxiety attacks.

Anxiety attacks are often brought on by stress, and yoga is certainly a powerful stress reduction technique. Yoga is, at it’s core, a meditative and spiritual practice which is designed to help free your mind from “mental chatter.” While this was originally a practice aligned with Hindu and Buddhist religions, there are very few classes or videos out there which are focused on the religious aspects of life, and you can apply the techniques regardless of whether or not you believe in the spiritual doctrine.

In keeping with this idea of yoga as a type of meditation, most classes have built in some breathing exercises and techniques to the regular stretching and posing movements. These will help you develop a certain ability to deal with stress and anxiety which is currently bugging you, and may teach you the mental processes necessary for dealing with future stresses as well.

While performing the movements and postures of yoga, you’ll be moving slowly, stretching your body over a period of time, and this kind of activity has a naturally calming effect on your body and your psyche. Of course, by removing some of the overbearing stresses of life, it is possible to eliminate many of the reasons behind anxiety attacks.

Yoga might not be a permanent cure, but it can provide temporary relief with a potential for long-lasting benefits for anxiety attack sufferers.
