Bhakti Yoga
Bhakti yoga focuses on the love of God. This path of yoga does not teach the normal practices such as asana, pranayama, mudra or meditation. Bhakti yoga seeks to emphasize love, devotion and the surrender to God’s will. If you are naturally inclined to God’s word, then Bhakti yoga may be your ultimate chosen path.
There are no specific ways to practice Bhakti yoga, as traditional meditation is not essential in this yoga path. The individual should choose for him/herself what methods will provide the greatest assistance. External items can help in developing an attitude of devotion. For example, an alter used during prayer, chanting or singing, pictures of saints etc. Your choice of devotional inspiration may not be the same as someone else’s, but as long as it is working for you, it is good. Prayer and chanting is often used by people who find meditation too subtle and quiet. They may even enjoy singing the different names of God.
Bhakti yoga is not something that we should allocate certain time for, it should be practiced in our daily lives and be apparent in everything we do. This can be demonstrated by showing love and compassion for others.
The most effective way of practicing this type of yoga is by simple and direct prayer. Take the time to just talk to God and then be still and aware of His presence. Individuals should seek to be pure. Love and devotion will purify our souls and minds. In a loving heart there is no place for jealousy, envy, fear or dislike.
This practice is a superior love for God, with no selfish expectations. If you are friendly with people who have little faith or do not believe, then perhaps reconsider the company you share. These people may have a negative effect on your devotion. Strengthen your faith in any way you can, as faith is necessary for the realization of God. Devotion can also be strengthened by eating Sattric food.
Bhakti can be divided into two kinds – Apara Bhakti and Para Bhakti. Apara is the lower kind of devotion which will be singing, waving lights or anything involving an active worship. Para is the highest Bhakti or supreme love. Here there is no loud worship as the worshipper is absorbed in God.
Be true to Bhakti yoga and practice it in your everyday life.
