Learn to Teach Yoga

After practicing yoga for several years you may choose to learn to teach yoga. Yoga teachers help encourage students in reaching their yoga goals and help students learn poses. Teachers encourage unity in their classes and create an environment of enlightenment, learning, and peace.

There are many forms of yoga you can choose to learn to teach. You may choose to specialize in one form or several. The type of yoga class you choose to teach should be one you are familiar with. You will feel comfortable teaching a class you have excelled in yourself. You can use your successes in the class to encourage your students.

Before your first class you will need to make a plan for the class. Determine what yoga poses you will incorporate. Plan an opening sequence and a closing sequence. Plan for all ability levels in your students and add challenging moves for advanced students. Make sure you plan easy moves for beginning students who will not have as much flexibility as advanced students. You must decide if you will use breathing techniques and use props during your class.

Run through your plan before class. You will want to ensure you have timed your session for the allotted session time and that you give enough time for transitions.

To begin your class you should demonstrate the asanas you will be using in your class. Not everyone will be familiar with them and it is important to be patient with the beginning yoga students. Do not use terminology they will not understand when describing movements.

You may have students with physical limitations or disabilities so plan accordingly. This is where your props, such as blocks, will come in handy. You can also adjust poses for students who are having difficulties.

If you choose to use music during your class make sure it is appropriate. Yoga music should be soothing and without words. Choose music that will match your movements and speed.

Include meditation during your yoga class. It will allow for relaxation and help you and your students achieve focus. Meditation is an important part of most opening and closing sequences.

While leading your class you can spend time focusing on your students. Ask if any specific body areas need to be addressed. This will let your students know you have their best interests at heart. If a student has been experiencing intense back pain you can insert an asana to help with this pain.

Remember that you want students to return and learn to love yoga as much as you do.
