If your goal in becoming a yoga instructor is to learn more about yoga and possibly lead a small group of friends and family you will benefit from DVD’s and books that teach aspects of yoga. On the other hand, if your goal is to become a yoga teacher and lead classes or teach others it will be important to become a certified yoga instructor.
Yoga instructor certification is offered in several different venues. One popular way to become certified to teach yoga is to attend classes at a local yoga-training institute. Many large cities have yoga training centers and with the growing popularity of yoga training centers can now be found in smaller metropolitan areas. Classes usually last for several months and cover many different aspects of yoga instruction.
Some future yoga instructors attend yoga “camps” or training seminars that are held at yoga retreats. These training sessions are usually held over a period of one to two weeks and are very intense. Yoga seminars are a highly respected means to get certified because the level of teaching at yoga seminars is considered to be excellent.
Yoga instructor certification requires two hundred hours of training. This may seem overwhelming to the beginner but the training involves much practice and is a growth experience for future instructors. The intensity of yoga seminars is important to get all two hundred hours completed but also to allow students time for self-examination and spiritual growth.
Once you have attained yoga instructor certification your learning and training has truly only just begun. Yoga instruction is an ongoing process that requires the instructor to continually practice and learn. The best instructors are the ones who have reached a state of supreme calm, which they are able to transfer to their students.
