How to Learn Yoga

Learning yoga is not as complicated as it might seem, particularly with all of the great information available to you in the modern world. There are hundreds of thousands of potential resources to teach you yoga these days for a minimal cost that would allow you to learn and practice in the comfort of your own home, or you could opt for the community-building and support that can be found in one of the thousands of local-area courses in yoga.

In our opinion, the best way to learn yoga is to take a class. In a class, you’ll get valuable feedback on your technique and how you can get better, and you’ll have an accomplished mentor helping you out every step of the way. You’ll also have the encouragement of others, and a scheduled routine that will ensure you stay in good practice. I’ve taken a number of courses through my local community college, my town’s park district, and just among a collection of friends. My recommendation, however, is to take a class with a gym like 24 Hour Fitness (most centers offer a yoga class, and the instructor’s I’ve had were incredible). Not only will you get to learn yoga, you’ll get a fantastic workout as well.

If a class is not an option for you, get a good DVD or movie training course. Yoga is about movement, and it only makes sense to see someone else performing that movement right in front of your eyes. A movie or a yoga video would allow you to see that where a book or a collection of articles would not.
