Chanting in Yoga

Chanting in yoga meditation has been used for centuries and creates many positive effects. Besides helping with meditation, this can actually improve your health. Improvements can be noted as stabilizing of the heart rate, lowering of blood pressure and an increase in circulation and metabolism. Chanting in yoga helps to relax the mind and body. This resulted relaxation assists the body physically, mentally and emotionally in many ways. Chanting in yoga and the use of mantras can be very important when trying to achieve meditation.

Chanting in yoga can be done at the beginning of a yoga class or at the end, or both. Used at the beginning of the class, it will help the individuals to de-stress and focus on the yoga session ahead. At the end of a yoga class, chanting will help to bring a peaceful end to the session. Chanting or listening to chants while engaging in yoga postures can enhance your enjoyment of the poses. Chanting is also used at the beginning or end of meditation sessions for similar purposes. The body and mind is energized by chanting in yoga and when it is performed with other individuals, we are reminded of our connection to others.

Mantra is sound. A mantra is a word or sentence with a phonetic quality that is repeated during meditation as often as necessary to help still the mind. A mantra need not be always repeated out loud. One can silently remember and repeat the mantra. This can be even more effective than hearing, reading or speaking the mantra. The use of a mantra will assist with controlling of thoughts and positive use of emotions needed for meditation. Mantras is recommended by nearly all religions and meditative techniques even though they may be used in different ways.

Everyone has heard of Om which is actually pronounced as Aum. In order to perform Om properly it may be useful to physically know how. Breath in deeply and audibly through your nose and direct the air to the point between your eyebrows. Now as you breath out produce the sound as a subtle whisper. Allow the sound to resonate in the cranial area.

Chanting in yoga and the use of mantras have helped cause meditators a much deeper spiritual awakening, but how does chanting actually benefit our health? When chanting or repeating mantras, our breathing rate is slowed to 6 breaths per minute. This puts your breathing rate in harmony with your cardiovascular rhythms that also have a 6 per minute frequency. As a simple explanation – due to this fact your risk of heart disease is considerably lowered.
